More than 150 community members had their say on cemeteries at GMCT's community engagement pop-up at the Fawkner Festa.

We used our interactive station at the popular community festival held in November to collect feedback, opinions and ideas on cemeteries from those living in the suburb of Fawkner in Melbourne's north. Fawkner is the site of GMCT's largest cemetery, Fawkner Memorial Park.

Participants on the day could nominate what they wanted to do before they died as part of an interactive artwork, vote in a voting pod activity, place a sticker on the ‘dotmocracy’ board to show how they felt about different activities that could be undertaken at cemeteries, and contribute to a survey about the role of cemeteries in the community.

The insights collected will help GMCT plan for the cemeteries of future and ensure they meet community needs and expectations.

“It’s important to us that we understand a range of community perspectives and experiences in relation to cemeteries,” GMCT community connections lead Ella Agren said.

“Pop-ups are a useful and interesting way for us to personally connect with those in our local communities as they go about their day-to-day activities. Participants can have a say in a lighthearted and engaging way, and contribute to making our cemeteries inclusive places for all people.”

“At the Fawkner Festa the community was very interested in cemeteries and shared many ideas and opinions about what they thought were appropriate activities to be held at cemeteries, how important it was to have cemeteries to visit and what words came to mind when thinking about cemeteries.”

Have your say

GMCT's new Community Voice Panel is an online research program inviting you to share your opinion on a range of cemetery issues once per month via survey.

We invite you to join us as a panel member to become part of a community-driven approach to memorialisation and end of life.

Everyone's voice matters, and everybody is welcome to participate.
