Vacant cemetery land on Sydney Road for lease to SES

The Chair of The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, Geoff Mabbett said today GMCT had agreed to lease a vacant parcel of land at its Fawkner Memorial Park site to the Victoria State Emergency Service.

Mabbett said the agreement would allow the Victorian Government to construct a fit-for-purpose facility for the VIC SES Broadmeadows Unit on a 7,130 square metre site on Sydney Road, Hadfield.

GMCT has entered into a 21 year lease agreement with VIC SES for the site, which is bordered by the Fawkner Police Station and the Upfield rail line.

Mabbett said the site would provide the SES with direct access to Sydney Road. He said the location of the rail line on the site’s western boundary, meant that SES’s operations would not impact on activities at Fawkner Memorial Park.

The lease between GMCT and VIC SES was approved by the Minister for Health, The Hon Jenny Mikakos MP in accordance with section 37 of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003.

GMCT is one of Australia’s major cemetery organisations. It operates 19 cemeteries and memorial parks and three crematoria in Melbourne’s north, east and west on behalf of the Victorian Government. Almost two million people visit the organisation’s cemeteries and memorial parks each year.
