The ‘Letters to Heaven’ memorial post box at Lilydale Memorial Park offers a unique and personal way to connect with those who have passed away. Write a letter, card or tribute to your loved one, and place it in our dedicated memorial post box located in the Melba Rose Gardens.
How it works
1. Write your message
Write a letter, card or tribute to your loved one. Share your thoughts, memories, love, or anything you wish to say to them.
2. Post your letter
Place your letter in the ‘Letters to Heaven’ memorial post box, located in the Melba Rose Gardens at Lilydale Memorial Park. There is no stamp required as this is not an official postage service.
3. Collection by GMCT
Once a month, our caring team collect the letters from the post box. Your letters and cards will be carried with respect and never read or opened. We understand these are deeply personal messages meant only for your loved ones.
4. Letters are buried, returning to the earth
Once collected, our team bury the letters in the rose garden, returning your tributes to the earth. Our thoughtful and sensitive process ensures that they never leave the site where they were posted.
Supporting families through grief
At GMCT, we understand that grief doesn’t follow a schedule and that the need to connect with loved ones continues long after they’ve passed.
The ‘Letters to Heaven’ memorial post box provides a meaningful way for families to express their grief and maintain a precious connection with their loved ones.
The memorial post box is available for anyone to use, and here whenever you need it. You do not have to have a loved one memorialised at Lilydale Memorial Park to use this service.
This service is currently only available at Lilydale Memorial Park.
The original ‘Letters to Heaven’ and inspiration
The ‘Letters to Heaven’ concept was created by Matilda Handy, a 9-year-old girl from the United Kingdom who wanted to send birthday and Christmas cards to her late grandparents.
The service was first implemented by the Westerleigh Group Gedling Crematorium in the UK, where it has since provided comfort to thousands of families across multiple cemeteries.
Matilda received the UK Prime Minister’s Point of Light Award and the British Citizenship Youth Award (BCYA) for her work and touching initiative.
GMCT team members visited Westerleigh Group cemeteries in 2023 to learn about their approach and bring this meaningful service to our Melbourne community.
