Commercial construction company Building Engineering has been appointed to deliver the first stage of the memorial park, following a competitive selection process.

GMCT CEO Andrew Eriksen says this is a significant milestone for the project.

“So far, much of Harkness Memorial Park has been imagined, whether through conversations, consultations, renders, or plans. Now the wait is over, and we can start seeing the park’s roads, buildings, and future memorial spaces taking their physical shape,” Eriksen says.

“It’s incredibly exciting to know that in a little over a year, we will be walking through the first stage of the memorial park together with the local community and Traditional Owners we worked with so closely to design it.”

Building Engineering recently delivered our award-winning Northern Memorial Park depot and will soon begin preparing the Harkness site for earthworks, road and building construction, and the development of memorial spaces.

Building Engineering Construction Manager Andrew Eljari says the team is looking forward to the project.

“We’re thrilled to continue our strong partnership with GMCT following the recent delivery of the multi-award-winning Northern Memorial Park Depot.

“Harkness Memorial Park is a landmark project for Victoria, and we’re proud to bring our capability and experience to its first stage,” Eljari says.

With early works completed in November 2025, the site has already started to transform with new trees and plants introduced to regenerate the land and increase biodiversity.

The site is expected to open in early 2027.
