Planning ahead checklist

Planning ahead for a funeral can be a daunting process. Knowing what you want is only one aspect of planning. We are here to help you.

Planning ahead can be a daunting process. Knowing what you want is only one aspect of planning. Before that, you will need to know all of the things you need to make decisions about, including burial, cremation and memorialisation offerings.

To help make sure you've thought of everything, we recommend creating Your Final Checklist, a resource designed by The GroundSwell Project that can be helpful when starting conversations about planning ahead.

It covers questions regarding documents, your send-off, loved ones and has room for you to make your own notes. We also recommend that you may want to consider writing your very own emotional will. If you require information about writing a legal Will, you can click here.

Remember that we have a range of resources available to you, and are here for you.

Maintenance of memorials

The Right of Interment holder is responsible for maintaining any memorial established in a safe and proper condition.

GMCT is empowered through the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 to issue directions in relation to the maintenance of memorials and can take actions to make a memorial safe for GMCT staff and visitors. GMCT may seek consent of the Secretary of the Department of Health to repair or remove a memorial and can seek costs and expense recovery from the Right of Interment holder.
